Emma, a mother of two, was referred to Joining the Dots in 2024 by the Macmillan Information Centre following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2022. She remained strong, even as she faced a recurrence in 2024 and a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer in 2025. Emma continued to receive supportive care and was surrounded by the support of her community, family and friends.

Emma and her husband Dan had dreamed of their wedding day, and thanks to the support of Joining the Dots and the Making Memories Fund, that dream became a reality. The fund helped cover the cost of bridesmaid dresses, allowing the couple to celebrate their love with family and friends.

Emma’s Macmillan Palliative Care Nurse, alongside the District Nursing Team, referred the couple to the charity Gift of a Wedding. The charity, with help from local organisations including Team Solan, came together to make Emma and Dan’s wedding day truly unforgettable.

Dan said: “It was a fantastic day; we smiled and laughed all day.”

Emma added: “The day was so special. I felt like a princess.”

Behind the scenes, Joining the Dots provided ongoing support to Emma and her family. This included help with finances and housing, arranging emotional and practical support for their daughters (aged 11 and 13) through the Osborne Trust and Willowburn Hospice, and connecting Emma with the Great Aycliffe Cancer Support Charity. Dan was also signposted to Durham Carers Support to ensure he had someone to turn to as a caregiver.

Emma shared her appreciation for Joining the Dots: “Thank you, you have been the one person who has called and kept in touch. Thank you for your help.”

Emma’s journey is a reminder of the support that is available in the community, bringing her some joy. The services worked together to bring her support and made her dream of getting married to her partner Dan, a reality.

Joining the Dots is a service that can offer support to people over the age of 18 who have been affected by cancer. If you would like to contact Joining the Dots please get in touch by emailing cddft.joiningthedots@nhs.net, phoning 0800 876 6887.

Since the writing of this story, Emma has passed away.
