Darren Barton, 59, was finding it harder to lose weight as he got older. Seeking support for this, he was referred to Wellbeing for Life (WBFL). With the service, he accessed tailored online support helping him to reach his weight loss goals.

After being referred to WBFL by his doctor, Darren joined a Virtual Eatwise group hosted by Jules Howe, Community Connector, and Emily Merriweather, Wellbeing Practitioner. The sessions were held once a week on Monday evenings. Here, Darren not only received support through each session, but he was provided with resources to keep that support ongoing while at home.

Virtual Eatwise groups are 12 sessions of weight management support accessed via a Microsoft Teams link. Groups are tailored to each individual attendee’s personal needs, while still sharing a sense of community and accountability that would not be possible in a one-to-one setting. These regular sessions helped Darren feel confident throughout the programme, as he was able to attend while being at home. He said: “It has really helped me in reaching my goal of losing weight.”

The online evening sessions also allowed him to attend 11 out of the 12 sessions while still working in his previous job. This flexibility is the aim of Virtual Eatwise. To allow access to those who may not otherwise be able to attend, and to give those who may not be comfortable with in-person groups the opportunity to receive the same support.

Darren achieved some fantastic results by the end of the programme that have greatly benefitted his health and wellbeing. “I lost over two stone and reduced my waist size, as well as other measurements.” When asked if he would recommend the programme, he put simply: “100%.”

As someone who enjoys many sports – football, rugby, boxing, and walking – this delivery of Eatwise was ideal for him. He found the accountability that comes with group sessions and their structures incredibly useful. Darren said: “It’s been a great experience for me. I’m a competitive person, and setting targets and goals allowed me to succeed.”

The improved fitness that comes with this weight loss will bring so many benefits for Darren. He’ll be able to continue being active and enjoy keeping up with his seven grandchildren.
