Claire Elliott, 49, was living with constant knee problems and did not feel good physically or mentally. After being referred to Wellbeing for Life (WBFL) and joining an Eatwise group, her self-esteem blossomed and she made key lifestyle changes helping her to lose weight.

At a visit with her GP, Claire explained she was having issues with her knees. They were struggling under the weight of her body, and overall, she felt heavy and lethargic. Claire had also been contending with poor mental health for a long time, and so she thought that losing some weight might make her feel better about herself. So, she accepted a referral to WBFL.

Claire is vegan, and when starting the group, she was concerned there wouldn’t be other options of health eating plans and ideas for her. However, Claire was put at ease when meeting her practitioner, Jules Howe, who explained that the Eatwise programme is designed to suit people’s needs, and gave Claire relevant support and leaflets which accommodate her personal needs.

When talking about entering the programme while struggling with her mental health, Claire said: “I received support in many ways. Jules was very understanding about my mental health needs and was respectful at all times, making the sessions easy and relatable.”

It was not only this personal support around her dietary needs and mental health that Claire was given, but flexible options tailored around her to get the best out of Eatwise. If Claire couldn’t make a certain session she could text in her weekly weight, and Jules would give her messages of encouragement. As Eatwise is a tailored programme, Jules and Claire discussed goals which were useful to her. Claire said: “once I set my long-term goal, I felt more enthused for the programme.”

Jules worked alongside Claire and the rest of the group to achieve both her personal goals and theirs. “Jules was perfect for me. The encouragement we all received was second to none. She is just fab,” Claire said.

Eatwise groups are 12 sessions of health eating education and weight management support. The groups are delivered in community venues across County Durham covering a range of topics to help people make lifestyle changes. This includes things such as:

  • portion control

  • food labels

  • how to shop for healthier meals

  • moving more/physical activity

  • coping with stress

The programme is adapted to meet the individual’s personal needs. Some may need support across the board, while others may need a little more guidance to make some tweaks to their lifestyle. Claire said: “The biggest thing I have learned from this programme is to watch my portion sizes. I wasn’t so much of an unhealthy eater, but my portions were way too big. I have also learned that exercise is a major part of a healthy lifestyle. We all know moving goes alongside a healthy diet, but seeing the results really brings it home.”

Since her experience with the Eatwise group has ended, Claire has noticed her weight loss through the way her clothing fits, and she finds it easier to getting up and down from chairs. Wonderfully, she also said: “My self-esteem has continued to blossom, and I have bought new clothes that I feel great in.”

“Claire has made great progress with the Eatwise programme,” Jules said. “Even when she didn’t feel great, Claire made the effort to come to group. We discussed Claire's needs and goals, and we made them happen by adopting new habits at home. I know Claire will continue with the healthy habits as she has a big goal in October – I can’t wait to see her smash it!”

Claire has a message to those who would like to make lifestyle changes: “If you are thinking of obtaining support in this way, just do it. It’s one of the best things I’ve done for me. I will forever watch my portions and keep moving!

The set up of the programme is very friendly. Being in a group is also a great way to make connections in your local area.”
