26-year-old Alex Graham lives with a rare genetic condition which severely affects his ability to use his feet. Whilst waiting for complex ankle surgery Alex had faced significant challenges: low muscle tone, poor strength, and being underweight - all factors that could impact his fitness for surgery and his subsequent recovery.
Alex had spent several years mostly confined to bed with little motivation. His mum and full-time carer, Helen, shared her concerns: “Alex has been waiting for surgery for a while and has spent a lot of time over the last few years in bed. He wasn’t exercising and had no strength. My biggest worry was how he would cope with such a long surgery and the recovery afterwards.”
For 12 weeks, Alex worked with Gemma, an Advanced Health Practitioner from the Waiting Well service, at Healthworks in Easington. The goal was clear: build muscle, gain weight, and improve confidence before surgery.
Alex explained: “Due to my condition, I have low muscle tone and strength, and it wasn’t certain how I’d cope after surgery. Thanks to Waiting Well, I’ve put on weight and gained extra strength.”

Through tailored gym sessions - using equipment like rowing machines and focusing on gradual progress - Alex made great progress.
Physical: Increased strength and weight gain
Mental: Improved confidence and motivation
Lifestyle: Greater independence and mobility at home
Alex shared: “It’s easier to get around the house now. I didn’t have much confidence before, but Gemma’s encouragement helped a lot. I wouldn’t be where I am now without it.”
Gemma noticed the transformation too: “Each week, I saw changes in Alex - not just physically but mentally. He’s more confident, relaxed, and chatty. You can’t get him out of the gym now, which is fantastic!”
Alex’s journey with Waiting Well has given him more than physical strength - it’s given him hope: “I’m going to chase total independence when the surgeries are complete. The confidence and mentality I’ve gained will be a massive help.”
Waiting Well is part of Adult Wellbeing Services, delivered in partnership by County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) and the Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP).
