For many people, hydrotherapy is more than exercise, it’s a lifeline. At the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton Aycliffe, the hydrotherapy pool supports both body and mind. Lorraine’s story offers a first‑hand insight into how this calming space has become an essential part of her wellbeing.

"I’ve only been coming to the hydrotherapy pool for about a month now, but it’s already made a huge difference to me. I have a condition where my muscles are gradually wasting away. It currently affects one side of my body, but it’s starting to move into the other side, so I use hydrotherapy to keep my muscles working for as long as possible. I do as many exercises as I can in the pool, mainly focusing on my legs as they’re the weakest and I have little balance. I do a lot of kicking, knee movements, and splashing, and I’ve recently added arm exercises too, as I’ve had problems there as well. It works.

"The moment I get into the water, my whole body relaxes. It’s hard to explain, but my entire being changes. There’s a deep sense of comfort and acceptance. I know I can’t control what’s happening to my body, but hydrotherapy gives me comfort in knowing that I’m doing something positive. It brings a feeling of calm, peace, and relief that I don’t get anywhere else. While the warmth is lovely, I think it’s really the opportunity itself that matters most. I make the most of every session, and it feels wonderful.

"I noticed the benefits from my very first session, particularly the sense of calm and relief from anxiety. I do worry about the future and how my condition might progress, so being in the pool gives me mental as well as physical support. A few sessions in, I began to notice ongoing improvements, especially when hydrotherapy is combined with the armchair aerobics sessions I attend. Together, they’ve given me confidence and helped me feel stronger. I rely on my wheelchair, but I’m starting to feel steadier, even holding onto the bars and walking a little more confidently.

"The jets in the pool have also been a big benefit for me. I have trouble swallowing due to muscle wastage, so I’ve been using the jets around my neck to see if they help. I’ve found my spot now and don’t move from it. Physically, it helps, and mentally it’s incredibly powerful. The pool washes away my worries and keeps me present in the moment. I don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future, I just focus on how my body feels and fully relax. Body and mind unwind together.

"I prefer my own company while I’m in the pool because I like to concentrate on my exercises and the mindfulness side of things, but I’ve still met some lovely people. There’s a real sense of community here, and I appreciate that there are different types of sessions for people who want to socialise too.

"The staff have been absolutely marvellous. They’re attentive, supportive, and always looking out for me. That level of care means everything and I’m also very lucky to live locally it’s right on my doorstep. Being able to book sessions without a referral is fantastic, and I never take that for granted.

"Overall, the experience here has been life‑changing. Alongside hydrotherapy, I take part in seated chair exercise, knitting group, and art sessions at the Pioneering Care Centre. The combination of physical activity, mindfulness, and creativity has given me a new lease of life. I’ve made so many friends and feel incredibly fortunate to have access to something so special, especially knowing that many people don’t have anything like this near them."
